Rather than the notebook serving as the progenitor of ideas for resolution in making, Watson evolves his ideas to a sophisticated level until they are ‘conceptually complete’ (Addison, Leaving Jericho, Chicago, 2003), at which time marking will take place. The fact that exhibiting is not the final terminus for the work but a temporary platform for an evolving set of ideas helped me to see that the books and the information that they contain requiring a different analytical strategy than some dominant ways of thinking about notebooks…
